The photograph of a snow-covered Pt47-65 leaving Granowo in the latest 'News',as at 25 feb, reminded me of my first encounter with deep snow drifts during a driving week in early january this year. It was on the stretch from Granowo to Ptaskowo;when we hit the first one,at c60mph,I lost all forward vision such was the force with which we hit the drift and instinctively slid open the cab side window and leant out.A big mistake,as we then hit the second drift! Janusc and Marek were not at all sympathetic as I withdrew my snow covered head back into the cab!Pt47-65 was superb all week, never losing its feet and a pleasure to drive, even if it looked a little lost with just two or three 'wagons'.But how sad to see PKP make such a hash of the snow,no doubt causing even more rail passengers to find other forms of transport, probably permanently.Anyway ,I can now add 'driving through snowdrifts at speed' to the very long list of factors that, for me, distinguish the W.E. from all the other ' footplate experiences' and for that,Howard and Trevor,I am truly grateful.

The Wolsztyn Experience is the only place left in the world where untrained amateurs can be trained to drive and fire a full size, full speed, passenger train for over 100 miles every day!
I've always wanted to drive a steam train ever since I was a small boy back in the 1960s. I went to Wolsztyn and fulfilled my dream!
This was one of the best weeks of my life. Getting out of bed at 4:00 in the morning to take the 5:05 train the 51 miles from Wolsztyn to Posnan. Driving along in the pitch dark at 60 miles an hour is something I will never forget! There is a polish crew on the footplate to take over if things go a bit pear shaped when aproaching a station or a level crossing, of which there are many, who allow you to totally control the whole thing.
Howard jones, who runs the Wolsztyn experience from the house in Wolsztyn along with his brother Trevor in the U.K. have created a totally unique vacation for steam enthusiasts from all over the world. Now in it's thirteenth successful year I highly reccommend it. I found the polish people very helpful and friendly. The local restaurants are good, and cheap. Fillet steak and a bottle of nice red wine for two only £16:00! I cannot enthuse enough about this great experience. 10 out of 10.

I went with my partner and was twice allowed to ride on the footplate whilst Chris was driving. It was dirty, noisy, smelly and shook me about......and I loved it! I was also able to 'fire' meaning to shovel coal into an enormous fire, and also operate the injector, cold water tap. All good fun. The Wolsztyn Experience staff were helpful and the Polish engine drivers were good too. Accommodation at the house was nice too. The town is nice and there are several lakes in the area, one having a path around it. The train is Pico Bello is particularly suitable for non-drivers!All round pleasant experience. Should be back next year Howard. Lynn
